Variety Is The Spice Of Life

During my first few years in London I joined a few social groups – mainly those for people with visual impairment like the London Vision communities, as well as the non-disabled group Thinking Bob. And they all helped me to settle in, make friends, try new experiences and build my confidence.

However, I got rather pulled away from that kind of thing as I formed my own social circle, had a relationship and dealt with the impacts of lockdown, as well as having to focus more on changes to my career and home life over recent years. So I haven’t been an active member of a social group for quite a while, and those I mentioned above have long since closed.

I’ve continued meeting up with my friends of course, which is always wonderful, so I still have good social interaction. And I’m also happy going out and about by myself sometimes. But there are certain things I can’t or wouldn’t do on my own, plus I want to have more variety and meet new people.

So I’ve been looking to get into more social activities again. And while there are still one or two friendly groups out there for people with sight loss, there aren’t as many as there used to be, and their understandably limited range of activities don’t really grab me a lot of the time to be honest. On top of that, I really want to meet more non-disabled people anyway, as my sight is still good enough that I can do activities with them, even if I need to ask for a little bit of help now and again.

There was one particular group I had in mind in that regard – Spice Social – who I’ve been aware of for quite a while, so recently I decided to give them a try, now that I’m in the age range they market themselves to. It’s still early days of course, and things could easily change as time goes on for all sorts of reasons, but it’s going really well so far.

For clarity, this post isn’t an advert for them, as they haven’t asked me to do it and haven’t even been aware that I’m writing it. I just wanted to fill you in on what I’ve been doing lately, as I’ve attended several events with this group over the past couple of months that I’ve enjoyed, and I have more booked in the near future. So it made sense to dedicate a post to them, and then I’ll probably talk about any future events in my monthly Favourites posts as usual.

June 2024 Favourites

It’s funny how things seem to come in threes. Last month I quipped that trying to eradicate mice from our house and the Conservatives from government was about banishing evil entities before they do irreparable damage, so what happens in June? I get Covid as well! Typical.

Thankfully there has been success on all three fronts. Our mouse problem is being dealt with effectively, so I’m just looking for a builder to do some repairs that will stop them getting back in. Covid affected Mum and I in a similar way to the only other time we had it in January last year, with Mum’s body effectively shutting down for a day to fight it, whilst I wasn’t that bad but still felt quite drained for a few days, not helped by it being the hottest and most humid week of the year so far. We’re both fully recovered anyway, and Mum having her booster jab a couple of months ago helped I’m sure. And now of course we have the sheer relief of the Tories being booted out in the General Election, after 14 years of chaos and one of the worst election campaigns in history.

I’m also glad that I was able to go out quite a bit during the first part of the month before Covid struck, by enjoying a sensory garden tour, exploring a new exhibition, having walks by the Thames and taking a day trip to the seaside. I met up with my aunt for a couple of those outings too, which was lovely – it’s just a shame we had to drop other things we had planned, as we had been trying to make the most of some time I had off work, and I had to miss a theatre show as well, but not to worry.

April 2024 Favourites

Hey there, hope you’re all doing well. I’m good, although like all disabled people in the UK I feel great unease over the government’s proposed changes to our benefits. My PIP review still hasn’t been dealt with after 9 months as it is. I’m not going to rant about it here though – I’ve posted a brief thread and shared several other posts on my Twitter/X page if you want a wider sense of people’s reactions. But please do read the proposals and respond to the consultation if you can (by 22nd July), as it’s vitally important to have our voices heard at this early stage. Same goes for the separate consultation about fit notes (until 8th July) too.

But anyway, on to much nicer things, and there’s plenty that I’ve enjoyed during this past month, including a couple of exhibitions, a West End musical, a theatre workshop, stand-up gigs and other comedy shows. One of the exhibitions was a press invite for my journalist friend Emily, and I’m due to be paid for the workshop I took part in, but nothing is sponsored to be featured here and all opinions are my own as usual.

Paws On The Wharf

It goes without saying really, but guide dogs are beautiful, incredible and vitally important companions to many people with sight loss. And right now there’s a sculpture trail in London dedicated to these life-changing and life-saving animals. This post isn’t a sponsored ad for it, but it’s something I think is well worth exploring if you’re in the capital.

Paws On The Wharf has been organised by the Guide Dogs charity in association with Wild In Art (who were also behind Morph’s Epic Art Adventure & Walking With The Snowman that I saw last year).

A large display behind glass, filling a section of wall in a shopping centre. On a yellow background is the Paws On The Wharf logo and the heading Sniff Out The Trial, along with some additional text, a QR code and a large image of a guide dog sculpture covered in black and white swirling stripes. At the bottom left, sitting in front of the sign but still behind the glass, is a small red sculpture of a guide dog puppy, decorated with various colours and patterns.

It features 25 sculptures of guide dogs decorated in a variety of ways by different artists, which will be on display until 17 May, after which they’ll be auctioned off. It’s all about raising awareness and vital funds to ensure that people with sight loss will continue to be supported by these magnificent beasts.

Roaring Successes – The Lion King & The Wizard Of Oz

August was a very busy birthday month for me, as you’ll soon discover in my upcoming Favourites post. But in amongst it all I went to another couple of audio described musicals – one gifted to me by a friend, the other I paid for myself – both of which involved lions in a big way, as well as touch tours. June 2023 Favourites

Chelsea & Belgravia In Bloom

Last week I spent a gorgeously sunny day with my friend and work colleague Emily from Fashioneyesta, as we explored the Chelsea In Bloom and Belgravia In Bloom installations. These artistic floral masterpieces were being exhibited outside businesses on various streets to coincide with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, as is traditional every year.

A lot of the displays were impressive and beautiful, and so inevitably we took lots of photos. It was easier to do that than I thought it was going to be really, because it wasn’t too busy, people didn’t spend too long taking their own pictures in front of us, and passers-by were happy to pause briefly as we quickly got our own snaps.

So I thought I’d compile some of my photos into this post, which you can click on to see in a larger size, as well as talking about the issues we had with finding everything. I hope you enjoy!

BBC Earth Experience

Having enjoyed the Wild Isles series on TV recently, and inspired by an Instagram post by Shona Louise, I decided to go and see the BBC Earth Experience last week, as it sounded pretty cool and very accessible. So I bought a ticket and went along one afternoon, and I really liked it, because the visuals are incredible and the audio description was really helpful. So here’s my little review of it.

April 2023 Favourites
